A Stoddard deck and railing running the full width of the house

Decks

A deck is more than the surface you see. How long it lasts depends on the framing, flashing and fasteners that end up hidden from view.

Built with intention

We listen to how you want to use the space, explain your choices, and build the structure underneath with the same care as the finish.

01 / The frame

A deck is only as good as the frame beneath it.

Square, level, and sized for its real spans and loads.

Kiln-dried pressure-treated wood

Our frames are Southern Yellow Pine KDAT (kiln dried after treatment) and incised treated Douglas Fir. Incising lets the rot-resistant treatment go deeper into the wood.

Flashed into the house

Most decks fail where the ledger meets the house. Fastened straight onto the house without flashing, it leaves a pocket for moisture.

Siding and trim below an old deck, stained and rotted along the ledger line A rotted ledger board pulled off a house during a deck tear-out
Both from decks we tore out. The damage was hidden behind the siding until the old deck came off.
  • We flash the ledger properly into your existing exterior finish, whether that’s siding or stucco, so water is carried away from the house instead of trapped behind the deck.
Taped joist tops

Before the boards go on, we tape the top of every joist. It keeps moisture from sitting between the decking and the wood frame.

02 / Railings

Matte-black powder-coated steel.

Our signature look. Custom-fabricated steel railings are the detail that makes a Stoddard deck recognizable. Choose from one of three designs, all in the same finish.

03 / Decking

Low maintenance. Honestly described.

The right board depends on your site, so we bring the samples to your house and hold them up against your own siding and stone.

Composite deck boards fastened with color-matched face screws
Surface screwed with color-matched Cap-Tor XD screws: stronger than hidden clips, and hard to spot.
Close view of composite stair treads with mitered picture-frame borders and black railing
Every deck gets a picture-framed border, so no cut ends show.
Care and what to expect

All composite expands and contracts with temperature and gets hot in direct sun — an outdoor rug helps with pet paws.

  • Clean it with a pressure washer.
  • Clear snow with a plastic shovel. A metal one will scratch it.
  • Most surface scratches can be removed by a professional with a heat gun.
