Built with intention

A pergola is a simple structure, so there is nowhere for poor work to hide. Timbers sized properly, solid joinery, and a foundation that will not move.

01 / Cedar

Cedar first, for good reasons.

Warm, naturally rot-resistant and low-maintenance.

Shade you can use

Shade is what makes a patio usable all summer.

More than cedar

We also build in Douglas fir, Japanese cedar and metal.

Foundation details

Where there is already a four-inch concrete slab, a pergola can often sit straight on it — it depends on the size and weight of the structure and on what the building department will allow. Where there is no slab, the posts go on concrete piers.

02 / Attached

An extension of the room behind it.

An attached pergola reads as an extension of the house rather than an addition to the yard, and it shades the rooms behind it as well as the patio.

03 / Detached

Placed strategically.

Standing on its own, a pergola goes where you need it: privacy where you want it, shade where you want it, and a clear edge that defines the space. The open design keeps the light and the air moving.

04 / Covered

Keep the light. Lose the rain.

A clear cover keeps the light and sheds the weather. It is the difference between a structure you use when the weather is kind and one you use the rest of the year.
